About Pachmarhi
The name Pachmarhi comes from two Hindi words: “Panch” (five) and “Marhi” (caves). It refers to the famous Pandav Caves. According to legend, the five Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata lived in these caves during their 13-year exile. Other caves in Pachmarhi also have ancient rock paintings, some over 10,000 years old.
Pachmarhi is the only hill station in Madhya Pradesh. It is located in the Satpura Range in Hoshangabad district, at 1,067 meters above sea level. Known as “Satpura ki Rani” (Queen of Satpura), it is home to Dhoopgarh, the highest point in Madhya Pradesh, standing at 1,352 meters.
This beautiful hill station is part of the Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve. It was discovered by Captain James Forsyth of the Bengal Lancers during the British era and has a cantonment area.
