Sitabuldi Fort: A Historic Gem in Nagpur

Sitabuldi Fort, nestled atop Badi Tekri and Choti Tekri in Nagpur, is a symbol of the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. Built in 1702 by Gond king Raja Bhakta Buland Shah, the fort has witnessed significant historical events, most notably the Battle of Sitabuldi in 1817 during the Anglo-Maratha War. This iconic fort, surrounded by modern-day Nagpur’s bustling commercial hub, continues to captivate visitors with its compelling past and strategic location.

About Sitabuldi Fort

The fort’s name has evolved over centuries, believed to be derived from Shitlaprasad and Badriprasad Gawali, two Yadava brothers. The Battle of Sitabuldi marked a turning point when Appa Sahib Bhonsle led the Marathas against the British forces. Despite their valiant efforts, the British, led by Lieutenant Colonel Scott and later reinforced by General Doveton, took control of the fort. In 1818, a treaty was signed that solidified British control, and major construction began two years later, shaping the fort as we see it today.

In recent history, the Indian Army maintained Sitabuldi Fort as a war memorial, paying homage to soldiers who fought bravely during the Anglo-Maratha War. Although it ceased as a war memorial in 2019, the fort remains a powerful symbol of resilience and courage.
